Tonight we had a BBQ together in Brisbane. Here are some images for those of you who could not make it....
We first had drinks on the balcony of the 7th floor at QCA, next to where the exhibition is.
Then we shared food tigether.
We ate Kangaroo meat.
Sakaguchi Sensei jumped around like a Kangaroo.
The BBQ was a chance for many of us to meet. We introduced oursleves and our partners after dinner and Susan Ostling, Russel Craig and Sakaguchi Sensai gave speeches.
Tomorrow we will finish installing all the artwork for the exhibition.

Two mobile phones.
I have two mobile phones now.
In a word, I borrowed another phone that can use in Australia.
So, we can call with QCA people.
Please call and wake us up when we overslept!
Now, I prepare to travel for Australia.
We just leave Japan in the night, and we arrive in the morning.
I need eye-mask, earplug, neck pillow, foot hanger...
There are too much goods for my sleep!!

I was thinking about World Expo, which was held in Aichi, Japan this year (2006).
I was 7 years old when Brisbane hosted World Expo ‘88.
Older people could tell you much more about Brisbane Expo ’88 and how it changed our place. It seems to me to have walked a fine line between culture fair/ culture wars.
I found this Fujitsu ad (linked, I assume, to the Technology Pavilion):
“A computer-generated 3D movie, dancing robots, a humanoid…combining Japanese technology with Australian know-how”. Cultural hybridity ’88!
When you guys (Geidai artists) come over, you are going to see a lot of paraphernalia that screams Queensland. This is a snow dome that my friend Neil (hi Nez) gave me to take to Tokyo when I first went for a year as a 17 year old, to remind me of home.
There are some real crackers of souvenir spoons out there if that's what floats your boat.
I make jewellery out of these spoons from different places in Queensland.

This week I also got my Senior First Aid certificate from the Australian Surf Lifesaving Academy.

Sydney Biennale
Also, the Pier is just a short walk from the MCA.
You can take photos and video of all the work so long as you don't use a flash. Artspace is giving out water which I recommend you accept as you need to remember to rehydrate when on a long walking circuit. Also, the critical reader put out by Artspace is worth a read.
I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Fri. 4th Aug.
I then went to a new contemporary gallery where I'm assisting with the preparation for the gallery opening and first exhibition in August.
Next Friday I'm going to Sydney with two friends who are also in the Gedai collaboration. We will enjoy three days looking at the Biennale artworks.
Brisbane winter temperatures this week are min. 10-11C. and max. 21-22C. Sydney is cooler (1000 km. south) about 9-17C. so you might want to bring some warm clothing for the evenings.

Private time
I went to “MANKITSU” to do internet.“MANKITSU” is Comics coffee shop in English.
I don’t like that this space is dark room.
I wish it has green and fresh air.
My favorite point is that it can enjoy many kinds of free drinks and relax! I paid a thousand-yen in two hour.
After that, I ate “MONJA YAKI" in dinner.
And, I watched the Japanese animation movie “GEDO SENKI”.
This producer is Goro Miyazaki
He is son of Hayao Miyazaki who is very very popular animation movie creator in Japan.
His works are very interesting!
This movie is the first work of Goro.
I like especially the scene that Teruu is singing a song.
She is heroine of this story.
I thought that this scene connects screen and a theater.

My Friday

Hi there,
I took a few photos on my way to Joshibi University of Art and Design, where I was using the library today.
There is a nice concrete structure near the back entrance to the campus.
It always reminds me of a Japanese artist's work who I studied for my Honour's thesis at QCA.
I'll upload them both.
The artist is Nobuo SEKINE, and the work is "Phase Mother Earth"
See you all soon!

Hello, this is Roya,
I hope I can show you the black swans and their three babies we see each morning in the park near our home. Black swans are native birds to Australia. I couldn't get any closer as the father swan was approaching me and protecting his family.
We walk our two little dogs there early each morning, except on Sundays when we take them to the beach for a really long walk. I live on the Gold Coast which is just one hours drive from Brisbane. We have beautiful beaches here and great surfing too. The whales are migrating north now to have their babies in warmer waters, so the radio and local news tells us any sightings for the day. We sometimes even see dolphins swimming close to the shore.
Looking forward to meeting some of you soon.
Regards,
Roya

Genevieve Relay Diary 19 JULY 2006

above photograph: a Sun Stencil, taken at 高野山
Diary for today, Wed 19 July 2006
Have arrived back in Brisbane, from 3 weeks in Japan.
It was fantastic to see many friends and meet many new people.
I was able to get around to a good number of contemporary art galleries as well as collect material for my own work.
After pulling off a very ambitious itinerary, I need a holiday.
Today, in a sea of dirty washing, I was elated to re-discover a couple of useful purchases I made whilst in Japan. I don't know how I managed without door handle covers (orange gingham with bows) before now. Also, if anyone can recommend a deserving Chihuahua, I bought a hat for one.
The crowd-pleasing artist book that I bought, 'small planet' (photographs by Naoki Honjo), is probably a better souvenir than the above to remind me of how small the world can be, after crossing and sampling so much of two different worlds, Australia and Japan, in a 3 week period. Honjo's distant, almost 'birds eye view' shots of different Japanese scapes which focus on a particular human activity or mechanical/architectural artifacts, seemed also somewhat to represent the feeling of perspective I had of Japan as an outsider this time, of the home, school and other culture in which I was immersed for a year.
Well, that's my rant for now. Sorry that I'm too tired too attempt a Japanese translation. Will write soon.
おやすみなさい。

Big Brother Down Under

Hi, I am Freya and my partner is Linda.
I am running late with my diary entry.
Big Brother is on in Australia at the moment. Here is an image of the housemates doing a cheerleading task.
This year Big Brother has included many twists into the game. One of these is the Punishment Room. I think of it as a way of introducing torture as entertainment at a time when the world overlooks torture in fear of terror.

Holiday in Kusatsu
I went to Kusatsu to refresh the other day.
Kusatsu is one of the most famous hot spring towns in Japan.
It is an unusual strong acid hot spring also in the world. The bacteri cidal activity is very strongly effective in various sicknesses including the skin disease. Moreover, it is said that it is effective in improving AIDS patient's immunity.
The bathing method for sick treatment was very interesting in a traditional original way.
There is a custom of taking a hot spring bath in Japan to be sanative up to the present time for a long time.
Recently, attention is paid to the culture of the hot spring of Kusatsu by respect of the medical treatment.
I had visited the hot spring as a place for the amusement to now. And, I did not know Kusatsu so much. Therefore, I was able to discover the existence of a peculiar culture to Japan that I didn't know this time.

Hello everyone
I awoke late this morning and although we are in the middle of winter I found it a beautiful day. The sky was clear and blue and the breeze was light, the temperature at about 20C.
Instead of going for a walk to the nearby beach I worked on a sculpture hopefully for the exhibition.
I hope that the weather will be as good as it was today when you arrive in August.

Through a friend in Canada I discovered a site, 'GOOGLE EARTH', that you can download for free, http://earth.google.com, on this site you can find any spot in the world. I was able to find my house and send the image back to friends in Canada. The photograph is a view from my house looking up the coast,it was this amazing cloud formation that just mushroomed up from the city, Surfers Paradise!

ppp exhibition.

Nice to meet you I am Kojiro Inoue. My hobby is darts. I have been participating in a darts club during half a year. I am a captain of a darts club now.
I have been doing the group exhibition in Toride since last week. Toride takes a streetcar from Tokyo and is a distance of about one hour. My atelier is in Toride. My art work is objet that makes 30,000 paper planes a material. It exhibited in South Korea last year.
http://www.geidai.ac.jp/labs/m_lab/ssugoremigi/
I think that I will exhibit about the revival work of this work also in Australia.
Darts and the paper planes are alike. When I am making the art work, it becomes a practice of darts. I love darts and paper plane.
Miraculously...
I live in Tokyo Japan now.
I succeed in record a streak of lighining on film with perfect timing!

Tokyo, Japan
Time - 9:52pm
Maximum temperature - 27degrees
Humidity - 88%
Today was a fairly usual Saturday for me. I always teach English in the morning. For one lesson, I usually teach a woman who writes politically oriented essays, and I correct the English. It a good way for me to find out what is happening in Japan.
Today also after work, I went to a monthly study session called Takigichi-kai where various Japanese scholars take turns giving presentations of their research. I have trouble keeping up, because of my poor knowledge of Japanese, but I try.
And tonight I should be writing a sholarship application! I will get to it after this!
That was my day!
Linda
